The COMPLETE Guide to Cigar Etiquette

The COMPLETE Guide to Cigar Etiquette

Today we’re talking about cigar etiquette: how to behave in a cigar lounge, things to do, things to not do.

Real quick, we’re going to go over what we’re smoking.

Mark: I’m smoking the Tatuaje Conoju 2012. Has a great brand, their bands are very minimalistic, and I think it’s a brand that’s not really talked about too much I would say.

Jared is smoking the Oliva Melano. Which is the broke man’s Padron, ironically.

Zachary is smoking the Besa cigar.

Alex is smoking the Pappy Van Winkle, which was requested by a couple people on social media.

Cigar etiquette, you know, rule number one: I see Jared as his Cutters over here, his lighter over here, you know what? I’m just gonna take it. Yeah, don’t be that guy. That wasn’t very nice. Don’t just take someone else’s stuff. Ask him politely, most cigar guys will be down to share their cutters and lighters.

Speaking of cutters, Mark got a new cutter last week. He got the cigar knife cutter from Les Fines Lames, we’re going to call it the Finesse. Made in France.

Real quick, I wanted to add that the Pappy Van Winkle cigar smells like barbecue hickory wood, almost like when you walk into a barbecue joint. It smells sweet, but it tastes salty, without lighting it, the wrapper tastes salty and barbecue. We’ll see how this goes.

Anyway, when you walk to the Cigar Lounge for the very first time, this is for the very new guy that doesn’t know what’s going on, he hasn’t smoked a cigar before, if you’re that guy: don’t be intimidated because honestly a lot of those guys are super chill, the guys that work there, even customers and stuff. If you walk in and say “hey, I’m a new cigar smoker I’m not sure what I like, can you point me in the right direction?”

I mean, first of all it’s their job, but a lot of the time it’ll be super cool, super nice and even be kind of excited to share their knowledge with you. So don’t be afraid to ask.

By the way, today’s whiskey is Horse Soldier Small Batch Bourbon whiskey. Hand selected, it’s forged in fire, legendary men signature, legendary spirits. This whiskey is actually made by the guys who went over and kicked the Taliban’s ass.

That was given to me, actually, by Donovann Musa who was here in the last episode.

Back to the Pappy Van Winkle, it tastes better than it smells, I’ll be honest with you. It literally tastes like a campfire. Apparently, it’s aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels.

Now, if you do ask for a recommendation at the Cigar Lounge, this is more for the guys that have been smoking, don’t go in there and be like “yeah what do you what do you recommend?” and then to have the guy take you through the whole thing and then be like “Yeah, I’m gonna stick to my Macanudos.”

If you were set on smoking a cigar before you go in there, don’t ask for a recommendation, unless you’re gonna at least buy it for later.

Cigar smoking is a unique hobby that requires a specific set of etiquette rules. Whether you are smoking in a lounge or at home, it is important to understand how to behave when enjoying your cigar. In this post, we will go over the most important rules of cigar etiquette.

First and foremost, it is important to be polite when it comes to sharing smoking accessories. Don’t just assume that a lighter or cutter is for public use, always ask the owner before using it. When asking, be polite and say something like, “Excuse me, is this your lighter? Do you mind if I use it for my cigar?”

When smoking in a lounge, it is important to respect other smokers’ space. Do not blow smoke in someone’s face and be mindful of the smoke you release into the room. Additionally, it is considered bad manners to take a puff of someone else’s cigar without asking permission.

When it comes to cutting your cigar, it is important to use a proper cutter. There are different types of cutters available, but it is recommended to use a guillotine-style cutter for the best results. When cutting, only cut a small portion of the cap, usually about 1/16th of an inch, to avoid damaging the cigar.

One of the most important rules of cigar etiquette is to avoid smoking cigars too quickly. Take your time and enjoy the experience. A good cigar should last at least 30 minutes, so savor each puff. Additionally, do not rush the end of your cigar. When you are down to the nub, it is time to put it out.

Finally, it is important to understand the different types of cigars and their strengths. A strong cigar may not be suitable for a beginner, so it is important to do your research before choosing a cigar. Ask for recommendations from other cigar smokers or consult a cigar shop expert to find a cigar that is suitable for your taste and experience level.

In conclusion, cigar smoking is a relaxing and enjoyable hobby, but it is important to follow the rules of etiquette to ensure a positive experience for everyone involved. Always be polite, respect other smokers’ space, light and cut your cigar properly, and enjoy your cigar at a leisurely pace. By following these guidelines, you will become a knowledgeable and respectful cigar smoker.
